"Some people see my shows and then say to me, 'This is not American theater.' And I don't know what they mean by that. Maybe what we are most used to is what we consider modern American realism and what I would call 'issue plays.' This is about racism, or This is about AIDS, or something like that. I don't write plays that have an issue that you could necessarily put your finger on. I think I'm trying to explore a different kind of language and a different kind of call and response with the audience where I say, I'm not going to feed you anything. This is going to be a live exchange between the story and you, and you will be asked to take away whatever you can from this piece."
